Ingredients

For Cooking Dal:

✅ 1 cup Toor dal (కంది పప్పు)
✅ 2 medium-sized Tomatoes, chopped
✅ 1 small Onion, chopped (optional)
✅ 2 Green chilies, slit
✅ ½ tsp Turmeric powder
✅ 2 cups Water
✅ Salt to taste

For Tempering (తాలింపు):

✅ 1 tbsp Ghee or Oil
✅ ½ tsp Mustard seeds
✅ ½ tsp Cumin seeds (జీలకర్ర)
✅ 2 Dry red chilies (ఉల్లంగం మిరపకాయలు)
✅ 1 sprig Curry leaves
✅ 4 Garlic cloves, crushed
✅ ¼ tsp Hing (ఇంగువ)
✅ ½ tsp Red chili powder
✅ 1 tbsp Tamarind pulp (optional)
✅ 2 tbsp Coriander leaves, chopped

Step-by-Step Recipe

Step 1: Cooking the Dal

1️⃣ Wash the toor dal thoroughly and soak it for 10 minutes.
2️⃣ In a pressure cooker, add toor dal, chopped tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder, salt, and water.
3️⃣ Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles on medium flame.
4️⃣ Once the pressure releases naturally, mash the dal slightly using a ladle. Add water if needed to adjust consistency.

Step 2: Preparing the Tempering (తాలింపు)

1️⃣ Heat ghee or oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
2️⃣ Add dry red chilies, crushed garlic, curry leaves, and hing. Sauté for a few seconds until garlic turns golden.
3️⃣ Add red chili powder and mix well.

Step 3: Mixing and Serving

1️⃣ Pour the tempering over the cooked dal and mix well.
2️⃣ Add tamarind pulp (if using) and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
3️⃣ Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
4️⃣ Serve hot with steamed rice, ghee, and a side of pickle or fryums (వడియాలు).

Tips & Variations

👉 For extra flavor, you can add a small piece of jaggery to balance the tanginess.
👉 For a spicy version, add more green chilies or a pinch of black pepper.
👉 If you don’t have a pressure cooker, cook the dal in a pot for about 25-30 minutes until soft.
